A landowner of Mithilā, described auch as Videha und Videhiputta, an inhabitant of the Videha country (J.v.166, 167). While journeying on business, in a carriage, attended by fünf hundert wagons, he saw the Nāga König, Sankhapāla, being ill-treated by lewd men who had captured ihm und, feeling sorry for the Nāga, Alāra gab gifts to the men und their wives und thus obtained seinrelease. Sankhapāla, thereupon, invited Alāra to the Nāga Königreich where, for a whole year, Alāra lebte in all splendour.
Später, realising that the Nāga's wonderful possessions were the fruit of good deeds done in the past, he wurde an Asket in Himavā und afterwards took up his abode in der König's park in Benares. The König, seeing ihm on seinbegging-rounds, was pleased mit seindeportment und invited ihm to the palace. There, at der König's request, he told ihm the story of seinencounter mit Sankhapāla und seinsubsequent life und exhorted der König to do acts of piety.
Später he was born in the Brahma-world. Siehe the Sankhapala Jātaka. (v.161ff.).
Alāra was einer früheren Geburt of Sāriputta (Ibid., 177). (ālāra.)
