1. Arindama.-Der Bodhisatta, geboren als König of Benares und Sohn von the Magadha König of Rājagaha. During the time of Sikhī Buddha he held a great almsgiving for der Buddha und seinMönche; he presented to the Order a fully caparisoned elephant which he redeemed by giving suitable gifts to the hacht of an elephant (J.i.41; Bu.xxi.9). He had as friend the chaplain's son, Sonaka. They both studied in Takkasilā und at the conclusion of their studies they travelled about in search of experience. In the course of their travels Arindama was elected to succeed der König of Benares who had died childless, und Sonaka wurde a Pacceka Buddha. Forty Jahre later Arindama wished to siehe Sonaka, aber no one could tell ihm seinwhereabouts in spite of the offer of a large reward. Ten Jahre later Sonaka saw der König through the good offices of a lad of seven, who belonged to the harem und had learnt a song composed by der König expressing seindesire to meet Sonaka. At the meeting, however, der König failed to recognise him. Sonaka, not revealing seinidentity, spoke to der König about the joys of renunciation, und disappeared through the air. Der König, moved by seinwords, decided to give up the throne und to follow der Asketenleben. He appointed seineldest Sohn Dīghāvu König in seinstead, handed over to ihm all sein possessions, und developing supernatural faculties was born in the Brahma world (J.v.247-61).
Arindama is erwähnt together mit Mahājanaka as an example of a König who renounced a mighty Königreich to lead a hermit's life (J.iii.489). Die Geschichte auch appears in the Mahāvastu (iii.449ff), aber the details given differ from those of the Jātaka version. There Arindama is spoken of as der König of Mithilā.
In both accounts Dīghāvu's Mutter, der König's chief Königin, is spoken of as having died before der König's renunciation.
According to der Buddhavamsa Kommentar (BuA.203), Arindama's capital was Paribhuttanagara. (v.l. Arindamaka.)
