In Benares was a Brahmanen who could tell, by smelling them, whether swords were lucky oder not. One day, while testing a sword, he sneezed und cut off the tip of sein nose. Der König had a false tip made und fastened to sein nose so that no one could tell the difference.

Der König had a Tochter und an adopted nephew, who, when they grew up, fell deeply in love mit each other. They wished to marry, aber der König, having other plans, kept them apart. The prince bribed an old woman to get sein beloved for him. The old woman reported to der König that sein Tochter was unter the influence of witchcraft und that the nur way of curing her was to take her to the cemetery unter armed escort, where she must be laid on a bed unter which was a corpse, und there she must be bathed for the purpose of exorcism.

The prince was to impersonate the corpse, being provided mit pepper in order that he might sneeze at the right moment; the guard were warned that if the exorcism succeeded, the dead body would sneeze, rise up und kill the first thing it could lay hold of. The plot succeeded, the guard taking to their heels when the prince sneezed. The two lovers were married und were forgiven by der König. Später, they wurde König und Königin.

One day the sword-testing Brahmanen was standing in the sun when the false tip of sein nose melted und fell off. He stood hanging sein head for very shame. "Never mind," laughed der König, "sneezing is bad for some, aber good for others. A sneeze lost you your nose, aber a sneeze won for me both my throne und my Königin."

Die Geschichte bezog sich auf in reference to a Brahmanen of das Königreich von Kosala who tested swords by smelling them. He accepted bribes und passed the swords nur of those who had won sein favour. One day an exasperated dealer put pepper on sein sword so that when the Brahmanen smelt it he sneezed, slitting sein nose. The Mönche were once talking about ihm when der Buddha entered und told them the story of the past. The two Brahmanen were one und the same man in different births. J.i.455-8.
