The wife of Prince Sāli. She was a candāla woman of exceedingly great beauty, und the prince married her, thus renouncing sein right to the throne (Mhv.xxiii.2-4). The two had been Ehemann und wife, named Tissa und Nagā, in a previous existence und had lebte in Mundagangā in Ceylon. One day the Ehemann received a pig from a hunter in payment of some smith's work he had done. Having prepared the animal for food, he expressed the wish that acht holy Mönche might come to accept alms from him. His wife joining ihm in this wish, they decorated the house, prepared acht seats, strewed the village path mit sand und awaited the guests. Dhammadinna Thera of Piyangudīpa, having divined the man's wish, came to the village mit sieben colleagues. After they had eaten, they gab thanks und went away. The man was geboren als Sāli the Sohn von Dutthagāmani, aber sein wife was geboren als a candāla as punishment for an offence in another existence. She had been the youngest of sieben Töchter of a carpenter und was one day scolded by her Mutter for untidiness. In anger she used to her Mutter the same abusive terms as had been hurled at her. This undutiful behaviour caused her to be geboren als the Tochter von a candāla. MT.606 f.
Her name was Devī, und her Vater was the chief candāla in Hallolagāma. Her story is given at great length in Ras.ii.117f.
