Der Bodhisatta war einmal geboren als a bull as black as jet. While still a young calf he was given by sein owners to an old woman, who reared ihm like a son; hence sein name ("Grannie's Blackie"). The village lads used to ride on ihm for play. Once he saw a Kaufmann trying to get sein fünf hundert carts across a ford; the Kaufmann's bulls were not strong enough for the task, und seeing the Bodhisatta the Kaufmann tried to make use of sein services. Der Bodhisatta agreed only after he had been promised a tausend. The task completed, the Kaufmann tried to cheat him, paying nur half the promised amount.
But the bull would not let ihm go till all the money had been paid. The earnings so obtained he took to the old woman, who was greatly pleased. J.i.194-6.
